Born on November 8, 1956, Mohamed Alabbar is an Emirati businessman best known for founding Emaar Properties, the company that built the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall, and for serving as chairman of Eagle Hills, an Abu Dhabi-based private sector investment and real estate development firm.

Mohamed Alabbar, the oldest of 12 children, was born in Dubai. His father reared his children in the Rashidiya neighborhood of Dubai while serving as the captain of a dhow, a traditional trading vessel. Alabbar was given a government grant in the 1970s to pursue finance and business administration at Seattle University’s Albers School of Business and Economics. Alabbar earned a degree in psychology from Seattle University in 1981.

He also served on the board of trustees of his alma mater until 2016, receiving an honorary doctorate in humanities from it in 2007.

He started out selling fabrics before moving on to air conditioners. His business sold up to 700,000 air conditioners annually by the 1970s, making it the second-largest dealer of General Electric equipment.
